James Dorling of Tesco came all the way from Great Britain to talk with the audience about how this retail giant handles climate issues. Tesco, which is the world’s third largest retailer with more than 2,000 stores, has recently opened “green” stores in Wick, Scotland and Shrewsbury, England. There everything from
the architecture to the energy supply adapters reduces energy consumption. Examples of steps taken include lowering the roof so there is less air to warm up,
and increasing the amount of natural light to minimize
energy consumption for lighting. The store in Wick is built completely of wood from “sustainable forests”,
and on the roof there are solar panels, mini wind power stations and collection facilities for rainwater. James Dorling said that Tesco is motivated to continue its sustainability work by a combination of commercial interest and by the expectations of Tesco’s millions of customers. The goal is to halve carbon dioxide emis-
sions in all new stores that are opened.
