Nordiska Museet, Sweden's largest cultural history museum, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. In
order to give the museum's historical contents a more contemporary package, BVD developed a new orien-
tation and signage system with floor plan outlines, directions, and brochures, along with a digital slide show for the entrance hall.

BVD's challenge was to create a new orientation system that both clarifies and enhances Nordiska Museet's identity, is a functional tool for visitors,
that inspires and evokes curiosity, and is easy for museum staff to update and change.

BVD chose to use the museum's existing typeface,
Nordling, created by the Swedish typographer Örjan Nordling. The colours for all communication are based
on the strength and simplicity of black and white.
These colours suit the existing architecture and are
a contrast to the massive building. The combination black/white is both classic and modern at the same time. The colour yellow is used to call attention to
and clarify certain directional elements. Twenty free-
standing columns and a number of signs hanging in strategic places guide visitors around the museum's many exhibitions.
